BEEs Going Big For Norte This Summer

Beyond racing and training, most of our athletes at Brockmiller Elite Endurance share a common bond that isn’t quite as competitive. No matter what level we’re at or how long we’ve been racing, we all just love riding bikes. From a quick roll through the neighborhood, commuting to work, or just as an excuse to get a cookie downtown, just being on a bike is a simple pleasure we want to share.

It’s that same and the lifelong passion it inspires that drives Norte to get more kids on bikes. The youth cycling organization has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, and their programs have expanded to include in-school balance bike workshops, walk and bike advocacy initiatives, after school programs, race teams, even maintenance classes for kids and adults. These are programs that help to build an active, healthy community, and Norte’s reach has now extended to places like Northport over the past year. They have a tremendously ambitious mission, with an equally committed group of cyclists, advocates, parents, and businesses to help make it happen.

Last year, Patrick Cotant, a new BEE, took on a two-day, two hundred mile ride to raise over $3,000 for Norte. His ‘Heavy Ride’ garnered a lot of support, and for 2018, he’s calling on some pals to join him. This year’s Heavy Ride is scheduled for July 27, the very peak of summer in northern Michigan. If you do a quick skim of the riders joining Patrick, you’re going to see plenty of familiar faces signed up to tag along. Ten of the confirmed riders raising money for Norte are all current or past BEEs, each looking to bring $500 to the ride in 2019.

There’s nothing ‘easy’ about this ride, and while it won’t be a race, the group is expected to average around 20 miles per hour riding north towards Mackinaw City. They’ll have plenty of rolling support and snacks are going to be spotted along the way, but they’re anticipating a solid five hours in the saddle. Of course, there are a few riders already planning on riding home Sunday instead of hopping on the bus!

We’re so proud to see our athletes supporting Norte and Patrick’s Heavy Ride this summer, and we can’t wait to see how the big ride, and Norte’s big plans, play out this summer.
