Beard of Zeus In The Books!

What a winter, what a weekend! It’s been an incredible season for our fat bikers, and the Short’s Brewing Fat Bike Series has wrapped up in thrilling style on Saturday.

Of course, our BEEs were out in force over the weekend, capping off the four-race Short’s Brewing Fat Bike Series with the grand finale, Beard of Zeus. The two-mile circuit race saw almost perfect conditions with sun, plenty of snow, and perfect temperatures for a day of hot-laps and cool prizes for winners and finishers alike. With the race right at Timber Ridge, it was always going to have a big turnout, and with over 100 racers, it was one of the biggest races of what was a really successful Series.

And it was a success for Coach Susan, to be sure. After a fast and chaotic opening lap, Susan settled in and plowed through the powder to take yet another convincing win and stay perfect in 2019! It was fellow BEE Chelsey Schlicht who has spent her winter as Susan’s shadow, picking up second at BoZ, second at every race of the Series, and second for the season-long points as a result.

Chelsey’s taller but less half, Sunset Scott was in with a shout at the title heading into Saturday. Sat on equal points with Rick Wetherald, whichever rider finished ahead of the other would claim the Series. After an early crash saw him distanced, Sunset spend the rest of the race chasing like a madman to cover the 1’20” gap back to Rick and Jorden Wakeley, the race leaders for nearly all of the day. Sunset got to within 30 seconds twice but never found the wheels, ultimately settling for third on the day and second on the Series, a hard-fought battle that has lasted nearly three months!

Luke Schwartz was also incredibly consistent over the course of the Series, and Saturday’s race was confirmation that his hard work in the Hive and out on the singletrack is paying off. He nipped in for 9th place in his age group, the always-stacked 35-44 category. Luke was just a few spots clear of Jaden Drews who was battling a head cold just as much as the course or competition.

Rob Goepfrich capped off this winter racing with a 10th place in his age group and a top five in the final Master’s points standings. One of the most consistent riders of the campaign, Rob is looking solid ahead of spring races like Barry-Roubaix and Mud, Sweat and Beers in just eight weeks.

We also saw some quality efforts from riders like Marilyn Kamp, Birgit Conway, and John Edingfield. Kamp was second on the day, a strong showing against some of the Series regulars on a what amounts to a home course for many. Birgit picked up 7th in her age group, while Edingfield was just outside of the top 20 after gutting out the final 30 minutes.

Bobby Flake rocked the 45 minute race, picked up not just his age group win but setting the second fastest time and a total of four laps in 51 minutes.

For many riders, the next big test is going to be just over a month away, with Barry-Roubaix knocked back a few weeks to mid-April. We’re heading into the Razor Sharp block happy with our winter efforts and incredibly proud of the hardwork of riders here in the Hive and out on the snowy races course of the Short’s Brewing Fat Bike Series. Congrats to everyone who braved the cold over the past three months, and we’ll see you on the gravel roads of Barry County very soon!
